Wairau Valley, wedged between Wairau Park's big-box retailers and the surrounding North Shore suburbs, is home to a well-established St John Opportunity Shop on Link Drive. It's one of the region's older St John branches, and it shows in a good way in some respects — reviewers describe a clean, neat, highly organised store, with one regular saying they visit weekly to make sure they don't miss the best bargains.

The picture isn't uniformly positive, though. Alongside praise for friendly, approachable staff, other reviewers have described less welcoming interactions, including complaints that children weren't made to feel comfortable in the store and one account of overhearing staff being spoken to sharply in the back room. A few shoppers also noted the store retains an old-fashioned feel in places, with some areas harder to navigate than others, even while acknowledging its value to the community.

As with all St John stores, proceeds go directly toward buying ambulances, health shuttles and life-saving equipment, so the underlying cause is a solid one regardless of any individual visit's experience.
