The Old Homestead: Point Chevalier's community op shop

Point Chevalier Road is home to one of the more unusual op-shop settings in Auckland — three rooms of a historic homestead building given over to a community-run shop, staffed by local volunteers.

It's been running since the 1990s, set up as much for community connection as retail: alongside offering good-quality, low-cost goods, it has effectively functioned as an informal drop-in point for the neighbourhood.

The scale is real — the wider Homestead property reportedly sees over 20,000 visits a year, making it a genuine neighbourhood fixture rather than a niche stop. Specific online reviews are scarce, but the operation's longevity says a fair bit on its own.

It's open weekdays, 10:30am to 3:30pm, closed weekends, at 92 Point Chevalier Road.
